چکیده

The paper discusses how the set of shape primitives to be used for decomposing a shape into meaningful parts may affect the performance of the decomposition method, and proposes a new set of shape primitives to be used when the input shape is represented by its skeleton. The suggested shape primitives comhine the qualitative, general notion of shape needed to cope with the large variability of objects one would like to describe in terms of the same shape, with the unique, computable definition required by shape recognition algorithms. Their definition is given in a contextdependent way, without using any threshold to distinguish among them. The results provided by a decomposition algorithm based on criteria combining both local and global information on the shpe of the figure at hand are very natural with respect to both the number and the description of the primitives forming the input shape.

Recognition of Bangla compound characters using structural decomposition

In this paper we propose a novel character recognition method for Bangla compound characters. Accurate recognition of compound characters is a difficult problem due to their complex shapes. Our strategy is to decompose a compound character into skeletal segments. The compound character is then recognized by extracting the convex shape primitives and using a template matching scheme. The novelty...

Extracting Shape Properties via Populations of Medial Primitives

Various properties of 3D shape are concentrated at medial locations and can be measured efficiently and robustly using populations of medial primitives that we call core atoms. These primitives are based on a graded measurement of medialness with scaled apertures. Analysis of them yields a medial cloud called a core. The local scale, orientation, and dimensionality of a core constitute fundamen...

Reconstructing shape boundaries with multimodal constraints

Shape primitives are a valuable input for reconstructing 3D models from point clouds. In this paper we present a method for clipping simple shape primitives at reasonable boundaries. The shape primitives, e.g. planes or cylinders, are 2D manifolds which are automatically detected in unstructured point clouds. Shape boundaries are necessary for generating valid 3D models from multiple shape prim...

Skeleton Extraction of 3D Objects with Radial Basis Functions

Skeleton is a lower dimensional shape description of an object. The requirements of a skeleton differ with applications. For example, object recognition requires skeletons with primitive shape features to make similarity comparison. On the other hand, surface reconstruction needs skeletons which contain detailed geometry information to reduce the approximation error in the reconstruction proces...

Human model and pose Reconstruction from Multi-views

We present an approach for automatic acquisition of human body model and pose estimation from multiple synchronized video streams. To represent the human shape we adopt an animated articulated skeleton-based model. A skeleton is a set of segments joined by articulations, which are generally rotations, to which are added (anatomical) constraints of variations of angles. First,we assume the foreg...
